We are delighted to welcome Professor Ira Bhaskar, Dean of the School of Art and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Professor Bhaskar holds a PhD in Cinema Studies from the Tisch School of Art, New York University, having previously studied at Delhi University. She held the posts of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in the Department of English, Gargi College, Delhi University from 1980 to 2006, when she joined the faculty of the School of Art and Aesthetics at JNU where she is now Professor and currently Dean of School.
She has lectured and published extensively internationally on narrative poetics, adaptation, and nationalism and cinema and has held senior visiting faculty positions at York University Canada, Columbia University New York and the University of Pavia Italy and Research Fellowships from the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and the British Academy. Her research interests include historical poetics; cinematic forms including melodrama; cinema and modern subjectivities; literature and film; and historical trauma, violence, memory and representation. She is currently engaged in editing Ghatak's Partition Quartet, a volume of Ritwik Ghatak's film scripts, and working on a book titled Historical Trauma, Memory and Representation in Indian Cinema.
