This award enabled me to do fieldwork in the Varanasi area and to document research material in the Indian Museum Calcutta, and the National Museum in New Delhi. This impacted on my later research, writing and teaching.

Baluchar silk and temple terracottas: a comparative study of motifs
The award gave me a good opportunity to travel and visit many terracotta temples in remote villages in Bengal that remained unknown and undocumented. I have (2001) prepared a popular article and two research papers are ready for publication. I interact usefully with a stream of students and research workers from the Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati and Burdwan University Bardhaman.
Coromandel Trade
The Visiting Fellowship gave me the opportunity to visit the museums and archives in the UK, including the Victoria and Albert Museum. The award also enabled me to gain more professional expertise and to enrich my knowledge of museology. I prepared a monograph about my experience in the UK and presented research papers to history fora on the Indian objects in the Coromandel- English trade.
